OSTEND THROUGH THE EYES OF ENSOR
Ostend painted by
James Ensor
James Ensor
With the exception of 3 years of studies at the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels, James Ensor remained in his native Ostend until his death. Not surprisingly, the city was by far the biggest source of inspiration for James to create his numerous works.
When James Ensor was born, Ostend was still locked in a military corset of fortifications. When those fortifications are finally demolished and Ostend, spurred on by the Belgian royal family, undergoes a real metamorphosis, it quickly becomes the 'Queen of seaside towns'.
It is also the run-up to the 'Belle Epoque' on the Belgian coast, and during this period Ostend is James Ensor's main muse.
