From the beginning of the 17th century, there is talk of an 'East Bank' in Ostend. Letting the sea break through the dunes created 'The Gully', which would later become the port of Ostend. 

For a long time, there is little activity on this East Bank. It was only during the interbellum period of the last century that the activities of Ostend's flourishing fishing industry shifted to this location.
